The Third International Conference on Laboratory Research for Planetary Atmospheres (3rd ICLRPA) was held in Palo Alto, California, on November 3, 1991, preceding the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society (DPS/AAS).

The resulting altimeter and scatterometer data from both of the European Space Agency's (ESA) ERS missions, TOPEXPOSEIDON, NSCAT, and Geosat represent extended time series invaluable for studies of air-sea interaction and ocean circulation. These maps of ocean surface roughness and height have also been assimilated into meteorological forecasts and soon into Ocean models.

Marsokhod Silver Lake Field Experiment

The Mars Surveyor program is planning a series of rover missions to Mars to perform in situ exploration and to collect samples for return to Earth. A successful program will require capable rovers carrying sophisticated payloads with instruments for in situ analysis as well as sample collection, handling, and preservation capability.

Photolysis and Radiolysis of Outer Solar System Ices (PROSSI)

Ices are an integral component of many extraterrestrial objects, from grains in the interstellar medium (ISM) to comets and planetary surfaces. Their physical properties and the chemistry of their behavior are affected by many different processes, among the most prevalent being photolysis and radiolysis. Both laboratory and theoretical studies have focused on understanding how these two processes affect the structure and chemistry of ices. In order to bring together the various scientific communities studying solar system ices (from those involved in laboratory and theoretical studies to those who observe ices in their various habitats) and access the current understanding of our knowledge base, the Johns Hopkins University/Applied Physics Laboratory hosted a 3-day NASA-sponsored workshop on photolysis and radiolysis of outer solar system ices (PROSSI) in March of 2000.

Radar Investigations of Planetary and Terrestrial Environments

Since the early 1960s, radar has evolved into an effective and powerful tool for investigating planetary surface and subsurface environments, helping to characterize the topography, geology, and subsurface physical properties of the Earth, Moon, Mars, and other bodies in the solar system. Of particular interest is the use of radar to investigate the hydrology and paleohydrology of planetary bodies, as well as its use for assessment of the distribution and state of subsurface water and the location of potential subsurface habitats capable of sustaining life.

Space Simulations in Laboratory: Experiments, Instrumentation, and Modeling

Laboratory experiments, aimed at analyzing extraterrestrial materials (e.g., interplanetary dust, meteorites), at studying samples analogues of cosmic materials, possibly under simulated space conditions, and at reproducing processes active in space are fundamental methods, in combination with model predictions, to characterize formation and evolution mechanisms of Solar System bodies. Laboratory simulations are also essential to develop and calibrate instrumentation on-board present and future missions targeted to study Solar System bodies and the interplanetary medium and for the interpretation of returned data.

Fido Prototype Mars Rover Field Trial

These papers summarize results from a set of field-based experiments and trials in the deserts of southwestern United States that focused on synergistic use of orbital and descent images and observations from the Field Integrated Design and Operations (FIDO) Mars rover. FIDO is prototypical of the 2003 twin Mars Exploration Rovers expected to be operating on the surface of the Red Planet during the first half of 2004. FIDO is also a precursor to the Mobile Science Laboratory expected to be on Mars in 2007 or 2009 and the follow-on Mars Sample Return Rover that should be conducting operations in the first half of the next decade.
