Advancing understanding of the Arctic Ocean freshwater budget
This paper develops and presents a box model for a meteoric water budget in the Arctic Ocean by synthesizing available data and previous literature estimates. This is of interest because of the documented recent increases in freshwater in Arctic surface waters, particularly in the Canada Basin and areas influenced by Beaufort Gyre circulation, that can modulate freshwater storage and have far-reaching impacts, including on Atlantic circulation. This is not only an interesting conceptual approach but also contributes to a better understanding of freshwater exchange and transport within the Arctic Ocean.
