New approach for selecting representative grids for climate modeling

One challenge in large-scale climate change impact assessment and adaptation studies is selecting representative grids for modeling. A major problem is that selected grids cannot represent a whole region due to spatial climate variability. This paper proposes a new approach: factorial inferential grids grouping and representativeness analysis (FIGGRA). Using a case study of the Loess Plateau, China, the authors demonstrate multiple advantages of this approach in comparison with commonly-used ones, including random selection. The impacts of climate variabilities and model parameters on grid-selection results and performances are also revealed. This is an important topic and highly relevant to the field of large scale modeling.
