Little impact of Three Gorges Dam on recent decadal lake decline across China's Yangtze Plain

This paper demonstrates how we can do ‘fingerprinting’ studies in hydrology in the same vein that climate modelers do so in relation to temperature or precipitation and global climate change. The authors look at several possible explanations for regional-scale hydrologic change and demonstrate which factor is dominant. The results are particularly important in relation to highly-populated regions such as the Yangtze Plain where a better understanding is needed of the controls of hydrologic changes. This paper shows exactly what is going on in that region, and it could be used as a jumping-off point for future management decisions.
