Diagnosing phosphorus limitations in natural terrestrial ecosystems in carbon cycle models

This papers presents a very thorough analysis of potential phosphorus (P) limitation in climate change scenarios with a host of different assumptions in global-scale simulations. Using output from 3 Earth System Models under 2 Representative Concentration Pathways scenarios the authors look at future P demand and limitation using stock and flux based approaches. The paper lays out an argument for including soil P in models; performs a sensitivity analysis to determine which P processes are most influential on carbon (C) sequestration; and compares P limitation based on C stock and net primary productivity methods. There is a wealth of data included such as globally-gridded soil and vegetation C:P estimates. Overall this study is useful in quantifying the importance of P for global change and suggesting priorities for areas of future research.
